About the area

Why rent in Cambridge

Cambridge rentals are competitive in a way that doesn't reflect well on the market.

In most of the city, units list and rent inside two weeks. Open houses get fifteen people. The September turnover cycle means a third of the city's leases expire on the same day, and prices spike in May for a reason. None of that is a secret to anyone who has rented here, but a lot of property managers act like it is.

We try to do the opposite. Our listings show credit and income requirements before the tour. We respond to inquiries the same day during the busy stretch from April through August. We post most units about six weeks ahead of the move-in date so you have time to see them, talk to your co-signer if you need one, and apply without a surprise.

Cambridge 1-bedrooms in our portfolio start around $2,800. 2-bedrooms run $3,200-3,500 in Inman or Porter, more around Harvard. We don't manage anything in West Cambridge — that's outside our patch — but we know the agents who do and will refer you if we don't have what you're looking for.

Common questions

Renting in Cambridge

What credit score do I need to rent with Northwind?

Primary applicants need 660+. Co-signers accepted down to 600 with a 720+ co-signer.

When do most Cambridge units come available?

September 1 is the dominant turnover date — about 40% of our portfolio renews or turns then. We list those units in mid-July. Off-cycle units (June 1, October 1, etc.) are easier to land but rarer.

Are your apartments pet-friendly?

About 75% of our Cambridge units accept pets. Flat $40/month pet rent, no breed restrictions, no weight limits.

Do you have studios available in Cambridge?

Studios are rare in Cambridge generally and we usually have one or two at any given time. Closer to Central or Inman than to Harvard. Around $2,200-2,500.

Do you accept Section 8 vouchers?

Yes. Massachusetts state law prohibits source-of-income discrimination and we comply. Contact us before applying so we can coordinate the inspection.
